About

From 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, Portrait of Humanity is a global photography award born from a mission to prove there is more that unites us than sets us apart. It is one of the most viewed photographic exhibitions in history.

First launched in 2018 in collaboration with Magnum Photos, Portrait of Humanity is an open call to photographers to shine a light on what it means to be human in a tumultuous time in our history.

2020 has been a year of unprecedented global struggle. Perhaps now more than ever, we can find solace in what makes us human: the universal expressions of life that prove, after everything, we are made of the same things. First hellos. Last goodbyes. Moments of reflection. Periods of resilience. Stories of hope. Strives for change. And everything in between.

As part of Portrait of Humanity 2021:

  • 100 commended images will be exhibited on Clear Channel digital screens internationally, seen by tens of millions
  • 30 winning images and three winning series will be exhibited around the world as part of the Portrait of Humanity 2021 Global Tour
  • Three winning series will be published in print in British Journal of Photography
  • All shortlisted and winning photographers can expect international press coverage

Each year, Portrait of Humanity is judged by a panel of international industry leaders. Full details of this year’s panel will be announced soon.
